Hit Entertainment has revealed that girls' publishing property Rainbow Magic has now sold over 20 million chapter books globally.
Introduced in the UK in 2003 and acquired by Hit in March 2007, Rainbow Magic is aimed primarily at girls five to nine and is a collection of over 70 chapter books, which follow the magical adventures of Kirsty and Rachel and their fairy friends.
The books have sold 20 million copies in 30 territories and in 29 languages. 14 million books have been sold in the UK alone with master publisher Orchard Books.
Katie Price, senior director of global publishing at Hit, said: "20 million is a phenomenal amount of books in a relatively short period of five years. 2009 will see further new and ecxciting formats from Orchard plus a magazine, part work and sticker album collection.
"Frankfurt is also going to be a key fair in terms of growing international sales, so really this is just the tip of the iceberg."
Hit has been working closely with the creators of Rainbow Magic and the publishers in each territory to develop content for new books and a range of consumer products. Rainbow Magic is also undergoing a transformation from printed page to small screen, with a 1x60-minute special in digital 2D animation from the Answer Studio, one of Japan's leading animation studios.
The feature length special is set for release in autumn 2009 and will be supported by an extensive integrated marketing campaign.
