Cartoon Network snaps up The Annoying Orange

Firm picks up TV rights to viral hit for launch in 2012.

It is already the most watched web series of all time, and now The Annoying Orange will be coming to TV screens, after Cartoon Network snapped up the TV rights.

A new half hour TV series will launch in 2012 as part of Cartoon Network's original programming block.

To date, The Annoying Orange web series has notched up over 850 million total views on its dedicated YouTube channel as of September 2011. It is the ninth most subscribed YouTube channel of all time, with more than two million subscribers. It also has over ten million fans on Facebook and Twitter.

The official website also generates nearly four million page views each month.

"The Annoying Orange and Cartoon Network were just meant to be squeezed together," said Rob Sorcher, chief content officer at Cartoon Network.

In terms of licensed product, The Bridge Direct's toy line will launch in time for Christmas and will include talking plush, clip-ons and collectable figures.
