Independent UK publisher, Centum Books has appointed Fiona Macmillan to the new role of publishing director.

A respected figure in the publishing industry, Macmillan joins Centum from Random House Children's Publishers UK, where she was responsible for the publishing strategy for 0 to seven years. Macmillan has also held roles at Dorling Kindersley, Templar and Reed Children's Books.

The appointment is a significant development for Centum, which has seen its Q1 sales increase tenfold year on year - this is primarily attributed to significant investment in off-fixture promotional displays for its licensed ranges.

In addition, the firm's international business - headed up by Ross Walker - saw the company break into over 30 markets in 12 languages in 2013.

In the UK, the sales charge is being led by Clive Harvey, who was previously at Penguin Children's Books.

"Over the last three years we have grown at a phenomenal rate and we now view ourselves as a very credible force in the publishing world," said Geoffrey Reynolds, MD of Centum Books. "The appointment of children's publishing stalwart Fiona Macmillan, a name recognised throughout the industry, illustrates the extent of our ambitions for Centum Books.

"Our growth plans include the intention to create a US subsidiary in 2014/15 and to increase annual sales threefold by the end of 2015."
