After becoming the UK’s biggest opener of the year last week, Universal’s Despicable Me 2 topped the UK box office again this weekend, reports Screen.

The animated sequel scored another £3.99m to take its total to £22.9m, holding off competition from new releases Now You See Me and The Internship.

Andy Murray’s Wimbledon triumph and the UK summer finally turning up could be reasons as to why the ticket sales for the sequel fell 60 per cent, but this didn’t affect its position at the top.

This now means Despicable Me 2 is already only £10m away from the total £32m grossed by the first film in the UK back in 2010.

It's also now £3.3m away from overtaking The Croods to become the biggest animation film in the UK this year.

Next week, Monsters University poses the greatest threat to the on-going success of the sequel, whilst the only other animated competition to grace UK screens arrives right at the end of the month in the form of The Smurfs 2 on July 31st.
