Disney has used its D23 Expo to shed light on new Star Wars, Toy Story and Avatar areas heading to some of its biggest theme parks.
Two Star Wars areas are heading to the Disneyland park in Anaheim, California and Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.
Plans involve creating Disney’s largest single-themed land expansions ever at 14-acres each and the areas promise to transport guests to 'a never-before-seen planet, a remote trading port and one of the last stops before wild space where Star Wars characters and their stories come to life'.
“I am thrilled to announce the next chapter in the long and exciting history between Disney Parks and Star Wars,” said The Walt Disney Company chairman and CEO Bob Iger.
“Through each new attraction and new land we create, we push the boundaries of what is possible. And as you can imagine, with Star Wars, we are taking that to a whole new level, with a whole galaxy to explore.”
Disney will also be launching Season of the Force, a new seasonal event debuting early 2016.
In Tomorrowland at Disneyland, guests will be able to explore the Star Wars galaxy with special entertainment, themed food locations and Hyperspace Mountain, a reimagining of the Space Mountain attraction.
Later this year, Star Tours: The Adventures Continue at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida and Disneyland park in California will include a new adventure featuring locations and characters from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Elsewhere, the 11 acre Toy Story Land will open at Disney's Hollywood Studios.
The new area will boast a family-friendly roller coaster set on the back of Slinky Dog and an Alien saucers attraction that sees the little green aliens from the series take guests around for a spin in their own flying saucers.
Finally, as part of the largest expansion in the park’s history, Disney’s Animal Kingdom will invite guests into the world of Avatar, a development that will see the entire park will transform after dark with new nighttime entertainment experiences.
The new Avatar area will include Flight of Passage, a ride that allows visitors to 'soar on a Banshee over a vast alien world', and Rivers of Light, a show combining live performers, floating lanterns, water screens and animal imagery.
