Walt Disney Studios is working on a live-action remake of its popular 1998 animated movie, Mulan.

The studio has bought a script from writing team Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek that centres on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, the female warrior and lead character in Disney’s original title.

The 1998, animated original, directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook, follows the adventures of Mulan as she disguises herself as a man to take her father’s place in the army with her dragon friend Mushu.

The popularity of the title saw it gross over $300 million worldwide.

Mulan now joins a growing list of live-action remakes of classic Disney titles, which was kicked off with Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland in 2010 and was followed by last year’s Maleficent.

This year’s Cinderella has already topped $336 million worldwide in just three weeks.

Disney is currently working on a live-action version of Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson, The Jungle Book, a sequel to Alice in Wonderland and a new Dumbo title.
