Disney is to release more than 20 books to fill the gap in the Star Wars saga before the launch of the upcoming film, The Force Awakens.

At least 20 new titles will be released this autumn to bridge the gap between 1983’s Return of the Jedi and December’s installment.

The collection will cover novels for adults and teens, as well as storybooks and sticker books for younger readers.

The new series will be known as Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens and will span multiple publishers.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Disney Publishing Worldwide and Lucasfilm have confirmed that the new titles will be ‘filled with Easter eggs foreshadowing events in J.J. Abrams’ movie.’

Last April, Lucasfim revealed its intentions to discard the Expanded Universe of Star Wars from the official storyline, freeing the new features from having to follow certain story points.

The new books – along with the Star Wars Rebels animated series on Disney XD – will be considered official canon.

“The Force Awakens is an extraordinarily, heavily guarded storyline. To track it, a lot of top secret meetings were happening up in San Francisco as we worked through this programme,” said Andrew Sugarman, executive vice president of Disney Publishing Worldwide.

“The partnership with the story group and the editorial team always had to be true to the sanctity of the film while making sure that we find these moments to introduce hints, clues and puzzle pieces.

“Without revealing what those pieces are, it will just allow readers to speculate about the new film: What could a location mean, or what could a character mean?”

Only a handful of titles in the book series have been confirmed and Del Rey will launch Star Wars: Aftermath, while Marvel Comics is gearing for the release of Star Wars: Journey to the Force Awakens.

For enthusiasts, Studio Fun International will print Star Wars: Ships of the Galaxy.

Elsewhere, an adventure title following Princess Leia called Moving Target will arrive courtesy of author Cecil Castellucci, while Jason Fry will pen the title The Weapon of the Jedi, looking at Luke Skywalker.

A tale of Han Solo called Smuggler’s Run will also be released by comic book writer, Greg Rucka.
