Disney and Marvel's Thor: The Dark World has topped the UK box office in its opening weekend, reports Screen.

The third film featuring the Norse god (following Thor and Avengers Assemble) made £8.65m, with £3.1m in previews.

Thor: The Dark World marks Marvel's third-best opening in the UK, behind Iron Man 3's £13.7m and Avengers Assemble's £15.8m but the film looks well on course to surpass Thor's final UK total of £14m back in 2011.

Elsewhere, Sony's Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, made another £2.1m to take its total to £9m.

It should enjoy a healthy few weeks as a result of there being no animation competition until eOne’s Free Birds lands in the UK on November 29th.

Staying with animation, Turbo now has a total of £9.7m after adding £1.3m this weekend, Monsters University stands at £30.6m after adding £122,739 to its total and Universal's Despicable Me 2 now sits at a mighty £47.21m.

Thor faces a tough test staying at the top of the box office as Warner Bros' critically acclaimed Gravity lands in the UK later this week, having already made over $400m worldwide.
