Disney's Planes soars to No.2 spot in UK box office

Cars spin-off pipped by Kick-Ass 2, which had the benefit of previews

Disney's Planes had a successful takeoff at the UK box office, making it to the No.2 spot reports Screen.

The spin-off to Cars was made by DisneyToon Studios, as opposed to Pixar, and achieved £1.7m from 507 sites.

This marks a more successful launch than DisneyToon's last release, Tinker Bell and the Secret of the Wings, which made £528,820.

Planes would have made the top spot if it wasn't for Kick-Ass 2's previews.

Whilst Planes' total is made up of Friday to Sunday takings, Kick-Ass 2's opening including previews (Wednesday-Sunday). This helped the comic-book sequel make £2.48m overall, £2.1m of which came from previews.

Elsewhere, Disney Pixar's Monsters University has now passed the £25m figure while another £767k means Universal's Despicable Me 2 now sits on a mighty total of £42.7m

Disney's The Lone Ranger didn't pick up dramatically after a slow opening in the UK, taking in another £753,210.
