Egmont moves Stateside

UK publishing company aims to be leading contender in the US children's market within five years.

Egmont UK has revealed its plans to launch a US publishing division from next January.

Based in New York, Egmont US will be headed by Douglas Pocock, currently group sales director of Egmont UK. He will report to Rob McMenemy, senior VP and MD of Egmont UK.

Egmont US' launch list of adult and children's fiction and picture books will be published in autumn 2009. Its focus will be on delivering a line-up shaped for the US market from both established and new authors.

"Our goal is to be a leading contender in the USA children's market within five years whilst retaining our points of difference, notably our author care," said McMenemy. "The size of our US team and list will mean that each book is given the care and attention it deserves and every opportunity for success."

Egmont Books is one of the largest children's book publishers in the UK. Its catalogue includes a number of big name licences such as Winnie the Pooh, Thomas the Tank Engine and A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket.

Its magazine division is also successful, boasting the likes of Noddy, Barbie and Fireman Sam in its portfolio (pictured). Egmont UK sells approximately 16 million books and 11.5 million magazines every year.
