Garfield sees surge in Facebook popularity

Original cartoon strip cat passes five million likes on social networking site.

With the UK licensing programme continuing to grow apace, agent Bulldog has also seen a surge in popularity for Garfield on Facebook.

The cartoon strip cat - owned by Paws Inc - has passed the five million 'like' milestone on the social networking site.

These figures are supported with an increase in sales of licensed merchandise. Indeed, sales of product in the first half of 2012 alone show a rise of more than 340 per cent, in comparison with the same period last year.

Recent licensees to join the programme include Somerbond for men's nightwear and underwear, and J Fox for bags, belts, wallets, hankies and toiletries in wash bags.

Existing partners include Blues Clothing, Brand Alliance, Silverknit, Sert MST for pet products, Whitehouse for plush, for online greetings cards and Smiffy's for dress-up.

"Passing the five million mark on Facebook is a major achievement, and the UK is one of the biggest contributors to the site thanks to the huge presence of the brand in this country," said Rob Corney, Bulldog MD. "The team at Paws use their strong presence on social media to great effect, driving footfall to retail by announcing specific product releases to their fanbases."
