GreenLight to represent Thomas Edison

Estate of inventor to use firm's global reach to expand licensing activities.

GreenLight has been selected to represent the personality rights of Thomas Alva Edison.

This is the second recent estate signing by the firm, following last month's representation win for Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash.

GreenLight has been named the exclusive third party licensor to Edison's personality rights and trademarks, including his name, image, likeness, signatures and characterisations for new advertising and promotional opportunities (with certain category exceptions).

The Charles Edison Foundation will continue to manage its existing licensing relationships.

GreenLight will be aiming to expand licensing activities globally. Profits generated from licensing will go to the Foundation.

"Edison is synonymous with innovation - he is an enduring symbol of invention and human progress," said David Reeder, VP of GreenLight. "His breakthrough developments in the telecommunications and energy industries, as well as media and health care, make those sectors likely to licence his personality rights for advertising and product activities."

The term evergreen is probably used too easily when it comes to many brands. Really there are very few which qualify. Thomas the Tank Engine, however, certainly does qualify.
