Xbox 360 brand Halo 3 has beaten previous first day sales records set by the likes of Spider-man 3 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – shifting an estimated $170m in sales in the US alone in its first 24 hours.
20th Century Fox is the worldwide licensing agent for Halo, and will be showcasing its plans at next week’s Brand Licensing Europe.
“Halo 3 has become a pop culture phenomenon,” said Neil Thompson, senior regional director for the entertainment and devices division at Microsoft UK. “Not only is Halo 3 setting sales records, it’s also redefining entertainment. Within the first 24 hours alone, we’ve seen more than a million Xbox Live members worldwide come online to play Halo 3 – that makes September 25th the most active Xbox Live gaming day in history.”
Special events were held worldwide to celebrate the launch of the game. In New York, Seattle, Miami and LA Microsoft and its retail partners hosted marquee launch evenings attended by celebs such as Ludacris and Zac Efron from High School Musical.
The UK premiere was held at Waterloo IMAX in Central London with the celebrity count including Christian Slater and hip hop producer Pharrell Williams.
