Copeland. the first African-American female principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre, revealed to viewers that the doll was part of the company’s Sheroes program, which aims to honour female heroes who help to inspire young girls.

The new doll has been inspired by Copeland’s costume from her dance to The Firebird by Igor Stravinsky.

"I always dreamed of becoming an ABT ballerina and through Barbie I was able to play out those dreams early on," said Copeland.

“It’s an honour to be able to inspire the next generation of kids with my very own Barbie doll."

Copeland’s Barbie doll joins other Sheroes including the likes of Ava DuVernay, Emmy Rossum, Eva Chen and Kristin Chenoweth.

Lisa McKnight, general manager and senior VP at Barbie, added: "Misty Copeland is at the centre of a cultural conversation around how women continue to break boundaries.

"As a brand, we want to honour women, like Misty, who are inspiring the next generation of girls to live out their dreams. We know role play often leads to real 'play' in life and we’re thrilled to celebrate Misty with her very own doll."
