Disney and Pixar’s animated prequel Monsters University has knocked Despicable Me 2 off the top of the UK box office, reports Screen.

In its opening weekend the film made £3.45m, which, despite making No.1, is the Pixar’s second lowest opening of all time in the UK, with Cars’ £2.7m remaining bottom of the pile.

In terms of opening weekends, Monsters University doesn't compared favourably with the film it precedes, Monsters Inc which made £9.2m in its first weekend back in 2002. But Monsters Inc. was released in February, when the sun wasn’t keeping people out of dark cinema screens.

Despite being pushed off the top spot, Despicable Me 2 made another £2.22m to bring its total to £27.1m. This means the sequel overtakes The Croods to become the highest-grossing animated film of 2013 so far.

With kids breaking up from school on Friday, and the next big children’s movie release not arriving until July 31st with The Smurfs 2, expect Monsters University and Despicable Me 2 to hang around the top of the charts for a while yet.
