MTV Networks high definition service goes global

Viacom?s MTVNI announces the second wave countries to launch its high definition service (MTVNHD) for music and kids.

The 24-hour, English language channel will premiere before the end of 2008 in ten new countries including the UK (Sky), and Israel (HOT) and for the first time will launch across Latin America in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Venezuala, Peru, Ecuador, Caribbean Islands and Uruguay with DirecTV Panamericana.

The high definition service launched in September in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Norway Poland and Sweden and in France in November. The service consists of music based and kids’ original programming, acquired and from MTVNI’s multi-branded library.

Over 300 hours of original programming has been commissioned for the channel over two years including MTV Top 20, Uncompressed and Chartblast.

Rob Bakish, president of MTVNI said: “We always strive to bring the best quality entertainment to our audiences across all media platforms and MTVNI is constantly evolving and looking for fresh ways to distribute this content. We’re delighted to announce the extension of the service which brings MTVNHD to a whole new audience.”

MD and executive VP of MTVNI’s emerging markets group, which produces and manages MTVNHD on behalf of the network from its Warsaw office added:

“MTVNHD is now available in 17 countries, which, after just three months, is already very impressive. We’ve been gugely encouraged by the interest we’ve received from operators around the world, spanning Latin America through to Europe and the Far East.”
