Nickelodeon reveals SpongeBob short film competition

Fans and filmmakers invited to create original SpongeBob films for chance to win a trip to Hollywood.

Nickelodeon has opened its first ever global SpongeBob SquarePants short film competition, offering winners a cash prize and a trip to Hollywood.

Entitled SpongeBob SquareShorts: Original Fan Tributes, the competition invites fans and filmmakers of any age from around the world to create original, SpongeBob-inspired short films.

The competition opened on Monday, May 6th and will run until Friday, June 28th.

Films submitted to the competition must be centred on SpongeBob, his world or his friends while celebrating the character's personality.

The short features can range from live-action to animation to stop-motion and must not run any longer than three minutes.

Each entry can be submitted at www.SpongeBobSquareShorts.com and will be judged on originality and creativity, the incorporation of SpongeBob's attributes, and overall appeal.

Tina McCann, SVP managing director, Nickelodeon UK and Ireland, said: "We know that SpongeBob is beloved by UK and Irish fans and is a pop-culture icon so I am sure our audiences will be able to come up with creative and original entries.

"It is the first time that Nickelodeon has launched a competition on this scale and I hope that our SpongeBob fans take up the challenge and we have some strong representation amongst the finalists."

Finalists will be selected by a panel of judges with ten shorts in each category (under 18's and 18 and over) announced on Thursday, July 18th.

From July 18th through to Friday, August 2nd, fans will have the chance to vote for their favourite feature on the competition website.

The overall winner from each category will be announced in August.
