The pesky animated bunny, Peter Rabbit is making an appearance on the 50 pence piece as the Royal Mint celebrates the 150th anniversary of Beatrix Potter.
The launch of the new coin will mark the first time that a character from children’s literature has ever appeared on UK tender.
The tribute to one of author and illustrator Potter’s most famous creations is being released as part of a wider celebration of the 150th anniversary of her birth.
The image has been created by Royal Mint designer Emma Noble, the talent behind commemorative coins such as the 60th anniversary of The Queen’s coronation and Remembrance Sunday 2013.
“Peter Rabbit is immediately recognisable, he is a well loved character,” said Noble. “I’ve only ever designed commemorative coins and this will be the first time any have appeared in circulation. It will be great to find them in my change and see them in my pocket.”
The remaining three coins to feature further characters from Potter’s books will be released later this year.
