Roblox has partnered with the STEM learning specialist iD Tech to bring Roblox’s game-based learning to summer camps in the US next year.

The partnership will utilise the popular game platform as a vehicle to foster excitement about coding and STEM learning for kids. The newly created curriculum is an extension of its current Roblox Entrepreneur: Create, Code, Publish Games course.

This course uses Roblox’s built-in editor to create 3D worlds and then uses LUA to code game mechanics. Students will be able to publish, share and play games with friends on any platform from console to mobile.

Students will also study games that have been runaway hits and learn how to implement some of the same monetisation strategies.

Joy Meserve, chief programme officer at iD Tech, said: “The Roblox platform is perfectly suited to introduce kids to essential coding skills and STEM learning and that’s why we are formalising a curriculum around it.

“The fact that it is fun and entertaining is the perfect Trojan horse to get our students to engage in learning. We think this is going to be one of our most popular courses this year.”

Through the Roblox curriculum at iD Tech, students will have the opportunity to develop the skillset to build online games and characters and monetize creations. The course will be a fun, immersive and kid-friendly social gaming and learning experience.

“We first built Roblox as a physics engine and game development platform. Its growth and success is a testament to the millions of developers in the world who have used the tools provided to create unique game experiences that many more millions love and enjoy,” said Dave Baszucki, Roblox CEO and co-founder.

“Our partnership with iD Tech is going to fulfil a mission we feel is vital today – teaching young kids essential coding, game, and entrepreneurial skills.”
