It’s official: Scalextric is as cool as Apple, Aston Martin, Maybelline, Kiss, Xbox and even Wonderbra.
The toy racing car brand from Hornby Hobbies has made it into the 2012/2013 CoolBrands list, as voted by a panel of just under 3,000 consumers, 39 designers, experts and celebrities, from stylist and brand creator Ruby Hammer MBE to music group Rizzle Kicks.
The annual CoolBrands list is drawn from over 10,000 independently identified brands, which is whittled down to a shortlist of 1,200. All other brands in the 2012/2013 list will be revealed in September in the form of a £50 hardback book.
Last year’s coolest brands included Apple, Dave, Last.fm, Prada, Top Trumps, Stella Artois and many more.
Scalextric Marketing Manager Paul Chandler said: “We are incredibly pleased to be named a Cool Brand. Scalextric is the godfather of boys’ toys and an iconic British brand. Scalextric is, and always has been, a brand in pole position.”
Stephen Cheliotis, chairman of the CoolBrands expert council, added: “Even in a recession a desirable reputation is vital, so being seen by opinion formers and the British public as a stylish attractive brand, is not only a great compliment, but an indicator of success. Competition was fiercer than ever, so achieving CoolBrands status is something Scalextric can be truly proud of.”
