SEGA's Joseph Kim named SVP of worldwide games and digital platforms for Universal Brand Development

Former SEGA Networks executive Joseph Kim has been named senior vice president, publishing, worldwide games and digital platforms for Universal Brand Development.

Kim joins UBD this week and will report to Chris Heatherly, executive vice president, worldwide games and digital platforms. The division is responsible for bringing the company’s intellectual properties, franchises, characters and stories to life through games and digital experiences.

Over the last year, Universal has built and expanded a self-publishing organisation, taking a more active role in the creative, development, marketing and distribution of games based on its IP.

The team also continues to grow its licensed games portfolio and introduce new experiences onto additional platforms.

Kim will now lead strategy and operations for Universal’s games publishing business. In this new role, he will oversee slate and product management, marketing, user acquisition and revenue optimisation across all games and apps.

“Joseph has an impressive track record and is an accomplished leader with a deep understanding of games,” said Heatherly. “His expertise in both product and publishing will help us sharpen our focus on becoming a leading publisher in the industry.”

Kim joins Universal from SEGA Networks, the mobile operating division of SEGA Games, where he served as chief product officer since 2015. Prior to that, Kim was the Studio Lead at FunPlus in the Strategy Games division.

Kim said: “Universal is a company that’s well-admired for their breadth of rich IP and some of the biggest entertainment franchises of all time, ones that translate so well onto gaming platforms.

Universal Brand Development’s Games and Digital Platforms business unit creates interactive gaming experiences and digital content for console, mobile and PC platforms that extend brand engagement with the company’s franchises.
