The Chinese central government in Beijing has given approval for the Walt Disney Company to open the first Disney theme park in mainland China.
A special ceremony was held to officially 'break the ground' on the project, which will be located in Pudong, Shanghai. At the opening - which is slated for five years time - the resort will include Shanghai Disneyland, two themed hotels, a large retail, dining and entertainment venue, recreational facilities, a lake and parking and transportation hubs.
The Walt Disney Company is working with Shanghai Shendi Group on the project.
"Our Shanghai resort will be a world class family vacation destination that combines classic Disney characters and storytelling with the uniqueness and beauty of China," said Robert Iger, president and CEO of the Walt Disney Company. "Working with our Chinese partners, the Shanghai Disney Resort will be both authentically Disney and distinctly Chinese."
