The Sharpe Company has added popular publishing brand The Gruffalo to its portfolio, signing up to represent the property in North America on behalf of Magic Light Pictures.
The firm is now looking US licensing partners in all categories, including plush, stationery, giftware, greetings cards, calendars, apparel, nightwear, bedding, puzzles and games.
The classic children's book has notched up sales in excess of 4.5 million copies worldwide, since it was first published in the UK in 1999.
A film, broadcast on BBC1 in the UK on Christmas Day 2009, was seen by more than ten million viewers - giving it nearly 50 per cent share. A second half hour film, based on The Gruffalo's Child, is currently in production.
"Between the books, which will be re-released in the US by Puffin Books, and the two films, which will not only have broadcast exposure but will also be released on DVD, we strong believe our market is ready for this beloved character," said Charlie Day, president of Sharpe.
"The Gruffalo is a fast growing classic brand that will delight and entertain children in the US, as it has done throughout the world."
