Sony's The Smurfs 2 has taken the No.1 spot in the UK box office, reports Screen.

The 3D sequel which sees the iconic little blue creatures travel to Paris made £3.2m, just below the £3.8m figure achieved by the first film in its opening weekend in the UK.

Elsewhere, Disney and Pixar's prequel Monsters University made £1.75m to bring its total in the UK to £20.8m. In terms of Pixar performances in the UK, this now pushes the film past Cars and Cars 2.
