Sony Pictures takes wraps off Smurfs 2 plans

Sony Pictures Consumer Products has revealed a raft of licensees for the upcoming The Smurfs 2 movie.

The programme covers categories including toys, publishing, mobile games, apparel and accessories, among others.

Jakks Pacific has added several new toy products to its line of plush figures, activities and play-sets, while Pressman Toys has created board games, card games and puzzles. USAopoly has teamed up with SPCP on a Monopoly game based on the classic characters, while Build-A-Bear Workshop will be selling stuffable plush with appearl, accessories and sound chips (including new characters Vexy and Hackus).

Trends is on board in the stationery and party goods category, alongside Pioneer which has created latex and foil balloons.

In the publishing category, Bendon Publishing and Simon & Schuster are on board, while Haribo and Bakery Craft have signed in consumables.

Junk Food is back in the apparel and accessories sector, introducing further classic tees. Thursday Friday is a newcomer to the programme and has designed high-end totes, handbags and scarves inspired by Smurfette.

Other licensees for The Smurfs 2 include Brush Buddies, Beeline, Ubisoft, Zuuka and Goldy Toys.

"The huge success of The Smurfs at the box office in 2011 brought these classic blue characters even more awareness than before, so we've launched an even bigger product line for the second film," said Greg Economos, SVP, global consumer products at SPCP. "The products are inspired by both the classic characters adults know from their childhood and the CGI characters kids love from the first film.

"We've increased the breadth of the line to reflect what consumers will experience in the second film, including two new characters, Vexy and Hackus, who consumers will get to see in theatres this summer."
