Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Disney Pixar’s Inside Out both picked up the coveted BAFTA statue at last night’s award ceremony.

The blockbusting titles trounced strong competition from the likes of Minions, Ant-Man and Mad Max: Fury Road to take home the awards in the categories Best Special Visual Effects and Best Animated Film.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens emerged triumphant in the visual effects category, having fought off competition from Marvel’s Ant-Man, Ex Machina, Mad Max: Fury Road and The Martian starring Matt Damon.

John Boyega – who plays the role of Finn in the JJ Abrams directed, seventh installment in the inter-galactic sci-fi opera – secured another win for the smash hit film, taking home the EE Rising Star award, voted for by the public.

Meanwhile, Disney Pixar’s Inside Out beat both Universal’s Minions and Aardman’s Shaun the Sheep the Movie to take home the trophy in the Best Animated Film category.

Inside Out has managed to total over $800m at the world box office since its release in June last year.
