Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Minions and Jurassic World are among the leading films to have helped the European box office hit an all-time high of €7.3bn in 2015.

Last year’s total takings surged a whole 16 per cent up on its overall takings in 2014 fuelled by some of the biggest licensed properties and franchises, according to the latest European Audiovisual Observatory report.

Variety reports that at 976 million, ticket sales have climbed 7.4 per cent vs. 2014, making it the second highest level in the EU in the last ten years, trailing only to 2009’s Avatar.

All 28 member states across the EU saw an upwards surge in gross box office takings including the UK where the box office total shot up 30 per cent, more than €400 million vs 2014.

Germany achieved an all time record of €1.167bn.
