The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies has enjoyed early global box office success, having amassed $117.6 million in its first weekend.
The final installment in Peter Jackson’s second foray in to Middle Earth debuted in 38 foreign territories, including major markets such as Japan, Russia, Mexico and the UK.
In Germany, the film grossed $19.5 million in its debut weekend, in UK it took $15.2 million, France $14.5 million, while in Russia it amassed $13.4 million, ranking as the biggest Warner Bros. opening ever in the country.
The Battle of the Five Armies beat new release Exodus: Gods and Kings to prove it was the one film to rule them all.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part One and Penguins of Madagascar were third and fourth highest grossing films overseas, picking up $16 million and $14.7 million, respectively.
The Hunger games sequel has earned $611.4 million worldwide.
