Rumours are afoot that Peter Jackson is considering turning his upcoming two-part adapation of The Hobbit into a trilogy.

At ComicCon the director said he was looking into shooting additional footage for the films next year. Since then, sources close to The Hollywood Reporter have revealed that this could mean a third film.

The source said: “If we’re going to do it, we have to make a decision soon. It’s strongly driven by the filmmakers’ desire to tell more of the story.”

The cast and crew are reportedly in talks over the third film, with financial arrangements and new actor contracts to be negotiated.

The Hobbit's extensive licensing programme includes the likes of HarperCollins, Eaglemoss, Ravensburger, Vivid and The Bridge Direct.
