The Hunger Games: Catching Fire achieves fourth biggest launch of all time in the US

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has become the fourth biggest opening of all time in US box office history, after it made $161.1 million in its opening weekend.

The sequel also became the biggest November opening of all time, but fell short of becoming the biggest opener of the year thanks to Iron Man 3's superior debut of $174 million.

Catching Fire is now the forurth biggest US opening of all time, behind The Avengers, Iron Man 3 and Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part II.

The film earned 8 per cent of its first weekend takings from higher priced IMAX tickets.

Catching Fire has also outperformed the debut of the first film, which took $152m in its opening weekend.

Globally, the film has achieved a mammoth debut of $307.7m.
