The Last Jedi fulfils destiny at UK box office

The sequel is set to take over £27.5m over the opening four-day weekend.

The latest instalment in Disney's new Star Wars trilogy, The Last Jedi has scored an intergalactic opening weekend, taking over £27.5 million in the UK.

Disney now holds the top three biggest Saturday UK box office days of all time alongside Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Beauty & the Beast.

The film is also the biggest opening of the year, showing at over 700 sites across the country.

The film, which has opened to global praise from critics, has taken over $450M worldwide and opened in the US to an estimated $220M making it the second biggest opening of all time in America only behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens. 

Written and directed by Rian Johnson (Looper, Breaking Bad) and starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher among other stars, the film has received widespread praise from critics and audiences alike, currently sitting at 93 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.

In Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of the UK’s biggest film of all time, The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.
