Disney Television Animation has started production on The Lion Guard, a TV spin-off of The Lion King.

Aimed at children aged from two to seven, The Lion Guard will kick off with a TV movie in autumn 2015 before the TV series airs in early 2016 on Disney Junior and Disney Channel.

The Lion Guard will follow Kion, the second-born cub of Simba and Nala and leader of a group tasked with preserving the Pride Lands called the Lion Guard.

Rather than choosing a team of young lions to serve with him, Kion call upon his friends, including Bunga, a fearless honey badger; Fuli, a confident cheetah; Beshte, a happy-go-lucky hippo; and Ono, an intellectual egret.

Fans of Disney's The Lion King can look forward to special appearances in the show from Mufasa, Timon, Pumbaa, Rafiki, Zazu and Kiara.

"The story of The Lion King has deeply touched families around the world since its original theatrical release 20 years ago," said Nancy Kanter, executive vice president, original programming and general manager at Disney Junior Worldwide.

"We look forward to introducing a whole new generation of kids to both the Disney legacy characters and to new friends and heroes."

Wildlife education experts at Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park will serve as consultants on The Lion Guard and the show will incorporate themes of 'conservation, family and community'.
