The Tilly and Friends television series has scooped the top prize for animated programmes at the Irish Film and Television Awards in Dublin.

The awards ceremony – the 11th event to date – was established to highlight the very best of Irish screen talent across film and television.

The popular pre-school show’s developers, Walker Productions and JAM Media, were both present at the event to accept the accolade.

Based on the picture books by Polly Dunbar and published by Walker Books, Tilly and Friends now boasts a portfolio of 52 episodes that have aired in over 50 territories worldwide.

The show follows the adventures of a little girl and her five animal firneds including Hector the pig, Tumpty the elephant, Doodle the crocodile, Tiptoe the rabbit and Pru the chicken.

Dunbar said: “I think the stories show how it’s possible to get along together, even on those days when you’re feeling a little bit bitey like Doodle.

“When I first wrote the Tilly stories I didn’t dream that they would become walking talking cartoon characters.”
