Tolkien Week kicks off as The Hobbit turns 75

Warner Bros Pictures and others celebrating with Hobbit Day and more marketing activities.

Tolkien Week begins on September 19th with the theatrical trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. 

The first film in a new trilogy, based on the popular Lord of the Rings books by J.R.R. Tolkien, will be a key focus during Tolkien Week, which marks the 75th anniversary of the original The Hobbit novel. 

The new trailer will be broadcast online on September 19th, at 2pm Greenwich Time and 5pm Greenwich Time. Warner Bros. Pictures, New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) are getting involved with Tolkien Week.

Celebrations continue on September 21st, with activities related to the 75th anniversary of the book’s publication.

Hobbit Day follows on September 22nd, marking the birthdays of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’s Facebook page will roll out a series of features and competitions during Tolkien Week. The movie launches on December 14th. Sequel The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug arrives on December 13th, 2013, while The Hobbit: There and Back Again, hits cinemas on July 18th, 2014.

Warner has also reminded the trade of its previously announced licensees on board with The Hobbit consumer products, including Lego, Vivid Group, The Bridge Direct (toys), Ravensburger (puzzles and card games), Rubie’s Costume Co (dress-up), HarperCollinsPublishers (books) and Eaglemoss (figurine and chess partwork collections).
