TRAP reports surge in bootleg music merch following deaths of Lemmy, David Bowie and Prince

Trademark and Rights holders Against Piracy, a worldwide collective of rights holders and publishers, has witnessed a surge in bootleg music merchandise following the deaths of Lemmy, David Bowie and Prince.

So far in 2016, 132,529 complaints have been made, with many bootleggers looking to capitalise on the deaths with memorial shirts.

Over 832 seller accounts have had selling privileges removed this year following TRAP operations, and since the TRAP campaign launched in November 2014, the body has taken part in 144 raids and enforcements, with £2.6m value of goods and equipment seized.

TRAP has also managed to secure 32 convictions, with sentences ranging from large fines to imprisonment.

"Unofficial product which infringes artist’s intellectual property rights not only takes away an important revenue stream, but takes away creative control from the artist and gives the fan an inferior product," read a statement from Modest! Management, who represent One Direction, 5 Seconds of Summer and Little Mix.

"For this reason we are extremely supportive and happy with the work TRAP take on our behalf."
