Universal’s Despicable Me 2 has become the biggest opening film of 2013 in the UK, according to Screen.
Universal’s sequel took £4.9m in previews last weekend and £10m this weekend, making it’s £14.9m total enough to beat Iron Man 3 to the position of 2013’s biggest opening so far.
The film also knocks Man of Steel off of this weeks top box office spot and has become Universal’s best-ever opening weekend in the UK ahead of the Fast & Furious 6’s £8.7 first weekend total.
Despicable Me 2 is also shaping up for success when looking at the wider picture. It is now the UK’s fourth-best animated debut of all time, sitting behind Toy Story 3 with £21.2m, Shrek the Third’s £16.7m and Shrek 2’s £16.2m.
