The number of newborns named after Pokémon is on the rise in the US following the worldwide Pokémon Go phenomenon.

In a study by BabyCenter, when it comes to girls’ names, Roselia has risen 5,859 places, Onyx has jumped 2,184 spots and Eevee is up 1,377 places on the list compared to this time last year.

For boys, Ivy is up 1,287 places, Shay 64 places and Ash - the brand's main character - is up 248 places.

“Parents are always looking to pop culture for baby name inspiration and, right now, it doesn’t get hotter than Pokemon Go,” said Linda Murray, BabyCenter global editor in chief.

“It’s possible that parents’ enthusiasm for the game will reignite their love for the brand and spark a full-fledged naming trend.”

It isn't just the realm of baby names that has been affected by the love for Pokémon Go, the augmented reality game that brings the brand into the real world. The success of the game has also triggered a spike in sales for Bioworld's Pokémon apparel.
