According to Empire, Warner Bros has confirmed that it aims to re-release The Dark Knight six weeks after it’s released on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Although it will be available as home entertainment, Warner is hoping the release will help the Batman Begins sequel gain the $4 million it needs to become just the fourth movie to hit the billion dollar mark worldwide.

"We wanted to provide one more opportunity for moviegoers to experience it on the big screen as it was meant to be seen," said Dan Fellman, Warner’s president of domestic distribution.

“Nevertheless we suspect that if the movie had been stuck on $700 million, the prints would have stayed in the warehouse.”

Released in cinemas in July, The Dark Knight is the most successful film of 2008 at the North American box office.

Only three films have grossed more than $1bn worldwide - Titanic, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and The Return of the King, the third Lord of the Rings film.
