Yottoy Productions has signed the Babar licence after reaching an agreement with Nelvana Enterprises and The Clifford Ross Company.

The New York-based toy company will produce a range of soft toys inspired by the classic kids’ book elephant character Babar, which celebrates its 80th anniversary this year.

The toys will launch in the US this autumn and roll-out will continue into 2013. There will even be five-feet tall plush toys created, with in-store and online retail promotions planned.

“We look forward to Yottoy bringing its innovative sensibility and high-quality products together with the timeless and iconic design of our beloved elephant, Babar,” said Andrew Kerr, head of consumer products for The Americas and Australasia at Nelvana Enterprises.

Yottoy’s founder Kate Karcher Clark added: “We are thrilled to introduce Babar and Celeste plush designs into our collection, as they are beloved classic characters that parents and grandparents embrace.”

Yottoy has produced toys for over 16 years including Paddington Bear, Maisy and Harry the Dog.

The first Babar book was published in 1931.
