VEGAS 2014: Felix the Cat to become "one of the most desired fashion brands in the world"

DreamWorks Animation has acquired the rights to Felix the Cat, with the intention to make the iconic cartoon a hit fashion brand.

CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg revealed the news at the Licensing Expo, calling Felix "the latest major addition to DreamWorks’ evergreen properties.”

Variety reports that there was no mention of plans for a Felix movie as of yet.

“Today, DreamWorks has acquired all rights to Felix the Cat,” said Katzenberg.

“Felix really goes beyond evergreen status and rises to something even more uncommon, as he is a true icon.

"We plan to make him one of the most desired fashion brands in the world.”

Felix started life in the 1920s in animated shorts, a comic strip and merchandise before starring in Felix cartoons in the 1950s.

The cartoons was owned by Classic Media, which was acquired by DreamWorks Animation in 2012, but the rights to the character itself were still owned by the grandson of Felix the Cat’s creator.
