Under a licensing agreement with Gulf-based food group Spinneys Dubai, Waitrose is to open 20 supermarkets in the UAE region by 2010.
The first outlet is expected to open in April in a suburb of Dubai populated by Europeans living abroad. Two further purpose-built branches will open their doors in July and October 2008.
One of these will be situated next to the Dubai Marina and the other at the new Burji Dubai Mall, which is expected to be the biggest shopping centre in the world.
This will be the first time in its 104 year history that the Waitrose store front will appear outside of Britain.
"This agreement is set to accelerate export trade for Waitrose and marks a significant milestone in our international ambitions," said Richard Hodgson, commercial director for Waitrose.
