Fifty Shades of Grey has proved to be just as popular as on the big screen as on the page, breaking records in its first weekend on release in the UK.
Screen reports that Universal’s adaptation managed a UK debut of £13.2m over Valentine’s weekend, making for a £23,000 screen average and taking 58 per cent of the market share.
The film’s UK debut is the biggest ever for an 18-certificate, the biggest for a non-franchise/sequel, the biggest February launch, the biggest Valentine’s Day debut, the biggest debut of 2015 so far and the biggest-ever opening for Universal.
Fifty Shades Of Grey has also generated $156m from 58 territories internationally to become the biggest ever international launch for an R-rated or equivalent film. The worldwide total currently stands at $266.4m.
The film is yet to launch in five territories, with it debuting in Trinidad later this week, South Korea on February 26th, the UAE and other Middle East markets on March 5th and India in the near future.
