Forbidden Planet to open Europe’s largest comic book and pop culture store in Glasgow

Forbidden Planet is to open the UK and Europe’s largest comic book and pop culture store when it opens the doors to its new Glasgow location this week.

Following a successful 31 years on Glasgow’s Buchanan Street, the pop culture and collectables specialist is relocating to Sauchiehall Street, where it will open a store seven times the size of its current Scottish site.

The grand opening will take place on November 9 this year and the destination store will serve fans with movies, TV, comic books, manga and science fiction “as never before.” Its three floors will cover nearly 8000 square foot of retail space.

Taking pride of place in the new Forbidden Planet store will be an eight-foot-high Funko Pop Chewbacca statue. When the new store opens its doors, it will not only be the biggest store of its kind in the UK, but one of the largest pop culture destination stores in Europe.

Kevin O’Donnell, Glasgow based group retail manager of Forbidden Planet, said: “Work is well and truly underway at the new store and it is a busy but ultimately exciting time for everyone involved in the project.

“We will now have three floors, a new gaming section, Manga and much more – it will be strange for everyone as it is more than four times the size of our Buchanan Street store.

“To see it taking shape is a real thrill and we can now start visualising how it will look on November 9th.”

The new store is planning to host events and more signings for comic book fans to enjoy along with the biggest Manga collection ever seen in the country.
