Hachette Children’s Group will be publishing a special, full-colour picture book edition of Ian Fleming’s story about the magical flying car, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
The project has been described as “an exciting new adaptation of a much-loved family classic – reimagined in glorious colour for a new generation of young readers.”
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is the only children’s book written by James Bond creator Ian Fleming. The author wrote the book for his young son, Caspar, and since its publication in 1964, it has continued to be a favourite among readers, while becoming the basis for the musical film and stage show.
Emma Layfield, group picture book publisher at Hachette Children’s Group and Anne McNeil, senior publisher, Hachette Children’s Group, signed the deal with Gordon Wise at Curtis Brown Group Limited on behalf of Ian Fleming Publications Limited.
The hardback edition will be released in autumn 2020, with the paperback following in autumn 2021.
Commenting on the deal, senior publisher Anne McNeil said: “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a classic story that truly touches the hearts of families. Peter Bentley’s adaptation of Ian Fleming’s original text will introduce the story to a new generation, and Steve Antony’s gorgeous artwork brings it beautifully to life.”
Ian Fleming Publications added: “We’re delighted to work with Hachette Children’s Group to make Ian Fleming’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang come alive for younger readers. And the creative team in charge of remodelling Chitty are second to none; we can’t wait to see them work their magic and watch Chitty soar to new, unexplored heights.”
