Halloween rises among British children as celebration rings in £365m in consumer spend

The growing popularity of Halloween among British children could see the annual celebration bring in a sizeable £365 million in consumer spend this year, according to a new seasonal survey conducted by Kids Insights.

Based on the results of a survey of 2,500 British kids in the 12 weeks between July and September 2019, this Halloween will see the average child spend £29.50 on all things Halloween related, including costumes, sweets, and decorations.

Kids Insights reports that Halloween costumes are to be the biggest expenditure for kids this haunting season, with the average child spending £7.40 on their ghoulish makeover this year. The total spending on Halloween costumes is predicted to amount to £91.6 million.

On top of this, Halloween wouldn’t be the sam without the trick or treating tradition, and sweets and chocolate are the second highest expenditure for kids at £5.80 per child. This will amount to a total of £72 million.

The survey also revealed that the average child spends £4.90 on decorations. Pumpkin spending by all kids will amount to £52m while the average child will part with £4.20 for their pumpkin this year.

“As spending increases on everything from Halloween costumes to pumpkins, it appears that Halloween will continue popularity in terms of holiday spending,” suggests Kids Insights.

Earlier this week, Beano released the results of its own study on children’s dressing up habits for this Halloween, finding that over half of the 2,000 British parents and children aged six to 14 surveyed will draw inspiration from Brexit this year.

The study revealed that 28 per cent of them will dress up as British politicians, and 20 per cent will use ‘Brexit’ decorations.

Eight in ten (82 per cent) British children have said that they now prefer modern and pop culture outfits for Halloween over traditional costumes such as ghosts, witches and vampires.

The research has revealed the top 20 topical Halloween outfit choices for 2019 which features Boris Johnson alongside modern pop culture favourites including IT 2’s Pennywise, The Joker and characters from Stranger Things and hit video game Fortnite.
