Happy News for DRi as uplifting lifestyle brand grows retail presence

DRi is developing the licensing programme around The Happy News, an inspirational brand based on a quarterly newspaper that features only optimistic and uplifting news stories from around the world.

The concept was struck upon by Emily Coxhead who is aiming to bring conversation around mental health issues to the forefront by demonstrating how being kind and thoughtful is where happiness starts.

In September last year, Coxhead earned herself a place on The Independent’s Happy List 2018, which highlights those who deserve to be celebrated for their kindness, courage and selflessness. She was more recently featured in the Great British Entrepreneur Awards’ Top 20 Most Exciting Young Entrepreneurs to Watch in 2019.

Over the last few months Coxhead’s profile has been raised significantly with a growing social media following of over 270,000. In April, she topped the BBC News homepage following the release of a two-minute film created by the BBC about The Happy News, her experiences with mental health and how the paper has positively influenced other people.

On top of this, Coxhead was also selected by John Lewis as an inspiring ambassador to collaborate with them on a high profile project in their Oxford Street store. John Lewis commissioned the entrepreneur to create a pop-up living room/home office, bringing the design of her office in Lancashire to the flag-ship London store.

The Happy News brand is now established on the high street with a successful greetings card range as well as extensive gift and stationery ranges from licensees Widdop & Co and Blueprint.  John Lewis continues to be a major partner for the brand, as is Boots with an eye-catching Happy News gondola currently in over 80 stores.

2019 will see extensions to both these ranges with a host of new exciting products. Also launching this spring is a range of super-cool confectionery from Crème D’Or including unicorn and star and jellies, chocolate neapolitans with fun and uplifting messages, marshmallow clouds and chocolate donuts. 

Penny Kennedy will follow in the autumn with a range of beautiful gift wrap and bags featuring Emily’s unmistakable handwriting as well as introducing the new sassy leopard illustration.
