Book publisher HarperCollins has partnered with Aardman Digital to launch a new app based on the latest Hobbit film, The Desolation of Smaug.
Entitled The Hobbit: Official Visual Companion, the app has been produced in association with Warner Bros.
The digital platform aims to engage fans of both the book and film series from Peter Jackson with content from The Hobbit Trilogy, including details, images of the characters and a rendered 3D map.
Nick Perret, group director of strategy and digital at HarperCollins, said: "This is the first step towards HarperCollins’ vision for persistent storytelling worlds that will act as a hub for fans of The Hobbit worldwide.
"This exciting new experience brings The Hobbit universe to life and will over time develop as a platform for discovering the world of Middle-Earth."
Creative director at Aardman Digital, Jake Manion, added: "It’s been an absolute pleasure to team up with HarperCollins and share in the adventure and excitement of The Hobbit trilogy.
