HikeForCal industry effort ‘well on target’ to hit £5k fundraising for mental health charity Mind

Industry efforts to raise £5,000 for the mental health charity Mind are ‘well on target,’ thanks to the success of this week’s WalkForCal event.

A two-hour walk around South London, WalkForCal raised £2750, over half the target set by Start Licensing’s Ian Downes, Warner Bros’ Paul Bufton and Sanrio’s Simon Gresswell ahead of their 24-hour walking challenge in September.

The tour took industry members on a trip around South London’s embankment area, starting at the King’s Arms on Roupell Street and ending at the Irish pub Mc&Sons on Union Street.

Guided by Downes, the group was treated to insight on local history, which included stops at London landmarks The Old Vic, Festival Hall and the licensing director’s old primary school.

Facts and anecdotes were shared over the course of the evening, a fundraiser set up as a precursor to the licensing trio’s epic Mind Hike challenge this September.

Walking together in memory of Ian Downes’ son, Calum, who passed away in 2015 aged 19, the three will hike non-stop, 40 miles across Cornwall in an effort to raise £5,000 for Mind, a charity that provides care and help for those with mental health issues.

“Thank you to everyone who joined us for the WalkForCal around London last night, Paul and Simon for helping to organise and thank you to everyone who has donated so far,” said Downes.

“We have now hit £2750 in fundraising, so we are well on track to hitting that £5,000 for Mind ahead of the 24 hour walk in September.

“This London walk is one I have done many a time with Calum, it is a nice to celebrate the social aspect of walking, the health benefits it brings and is a nice way to remember together.”

Of the HikeForCal challenge, Downes added: “Calum was much loved by his family and wide circle of friends at home and at University and his death was a great shock to us. Whilst everyone is still struggling to understand why Calum left us, his friends and family want to remember him in a positive way and try to nurture their love for him by fundraising in his memory.

“Myself and Simon completed the Hike last year and are delighted that Paul is joining us this year. We hope our participation will help raise valuable funds while shining a light on mental health issues and personal well-being.

“Licensing is a close-knit community but you never know what challenges people are facing.”

Guests of the WalkForCal event went home with a goodie bag of licensed products and a head full of local historical facts.

Paul Bufton, Warner Bros EMEA licensing and business development VP, said: “Such an amazing night on the Mind Charity WalkForCal fundraiser with Start Licensing’s Ian Downes. Arguably the London’s best tour guide.

“Thanks you for everybody’s wonderful support.”
