Ahead of the much anticipated Licensing.biz People Awards 2016, we have launched a week of round ups, taking a closer look at the big names running for a People Award on Friday, March 11th.
Today, we profile all the finalists running for a Rising Star award across both the Licensee & Licensing Agent and Licensor categories.
In the Licensee and Licensing Agent category we have:
Charlotte Clisby – Merchant on Demand
Charlotte Clisby is the co-founder and chief commercial officer of the tech start-up and retail company Merchant on Demand, a company founded only in 2012 but has shot to widespread recognition within the industry.
Clisby’s numerous achievements include building strong relationships with the likes of ITV, Saban International, CPLG and CBS as well as working with some big name brands including Liverpool FC, Bratz, Talking Tom, WWE, Power Rangers, Thuderbirds Are Go, Quentin Tarantino catalogue, Hunger Games and Star Trek.
In 2014 Clisby was nominated for a LIMA Rising Star Award and a Licensing.biz Rising Star Award in 2015.
“If ever there was an individual whose absolute determination to succeed against the odds, sheer relentlessness for developing and driving business, ability to work under pressure frm stakeholders and building relationships from nowhere to create a significant reputation within the industry could turn around a business from zero to one of the most promising, innovative young companies within the licensing sector, then Charlotte is most certainly the one,” read one nomination.
Emily Howarth – BonBon Buddies
A well respected and insightful international licensing manager, Emily Howarth has only been with BonBon Buddies for just over two years.
In her role, she is responsible for all the licensing in BonBon Buddies for all territories including EMEA and China as well as managing al key accounts for the majority of territories, singing comprehensive deals for Everyday and Seasonal Confectionery gifting ranges.
Howarth has worked alongside some of the biggest names in licensing, including Disney, Marvel, Minions and Teletubbies as well as Barbie, Playmobil, DC Comics, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Nintendo, My Little Pony and Transformers.
“Emily is already well networked with Licensing Agents and Brand owners and is a well-known personality in the License industry. She deserves recognition for establishing her role in the industry so quickly and professionally and always with a sense of fun,” said one client.
George Birtchnell – The Point 1888
George Birtchnell was a rising star finalist last year gaining clear notoriety with Patrick Monohan ending up on stage handing out awards to the finalists. After four promotions in 3 years at TLC he joined The Point 1888 in September, as Brand Manager and 2015 has been a monumental year for George.
"George truly lives and breathes brand extension, he’s adaptable, committed, passionate, commercial and a joy to work with. I haven’t met anyone in the industry that doesn’t like and respect him" read one nomination.
"What sets George apart is that he thrives under pressure, builds strong relationships and he already has the capability and judgement of someone with ten years experience," concluded another.
Sole Puerto – Bulldog Licensing
Bulldog Licensing’s Sole Puerto has had a phenomenal year.
Starting out as a geneticist I equine breeding, Sole joined the Bulldog team as creative services executive in 2014, where she quickly made the role her own. Over the last year, Puerto has helped guide the entire approvals process for Shopkins, ensuring 37 licensees were able to bring a huge number of products to market in double-quick time.
Puerto took things a step further in 2015, , electing to not only guide dozens of licensees through complicated and time-sensitive approvals procedures, but also design and facilitate all of Bulldog’s marketing and trade show stands.
Her actions througout the last twelve months have earned her a well-deserved promotion to Creative Services Manager.
And across the Licensor category, we have:
Sally-Anne Fee – Hasbro
“In her first role and year in the licensing industry, Sally has really embraced her new role. Always the first to respond, and challenge the norms; with efficiency and enthusiasm. A refreshing approach with a manner and style that is a pleasure to deal with,” read a nomination for Hasbro’s Sally-Anne Fee.
Having only worked at Hasbro for six months, Fee has already made a ‘remarkable impact’ on the business with the ability to build strong relationships both internally and externally with a professional passion and the ability to be a real team player.
“Sally’s career in licensing is just at the start, yet she is constantly striving to evolve and improve the way things are done, challenging the norm and providing improved alternatives. She has a very bright future at Hasbro, and although only at the beginning of her journey, there is no doubt she will make a success of everything she does,” concluded one of her nominating parties.
Harris McQueen – Pokémon
Harris McQueen joined The Pokémon Company in 2015 – a time when the company was relaunching its licensed consumer goods programme in Europe.
Working within the London-based marketing development team, Harris has been highly instrumental in helping get the Pokémon brand active again in the UK licensing sphere. In the lead up to Pokémon’s 20th anniversary, this brand extension has gained strong momentum, with Harris bringing in new deals in the apparel, accessories, food, greeting cards and electronic categories.
Harris secured the Pokémon’s first apparel listing for many years, in Next for AW’2015. This Pokémon character t-shirt went on to be part of Next’s children’s campaign in their promotional mailer. He has since secured further listings with several important retailers with product launching in Summer 2016.
He was also pivotal in signing a global deal for Pokémon with Build a Bear workshop that saw an adorable Pikachu soft toy launch in store at the end of 2015 and has secured several more collaborations to launch later in 2016 and 2017, all to be announced in the coming weeks.
Sara Baker – Entertainment One
Sara Baker joined eOne’s marketing dept as Marketing Coordinator in 2014 and has quickly become an indispensable member of the team.
She is the day to day point of contact for most of eOne’s licensees with whom she has built solid relationships and she manages the licensor’s wide network of promotional partners to ensure that all communications are on-brand.
Cameron Dicks – ITVS GE
A global agent and contracts executive at ITV, Cameron Dicks only moved into licensing ne year ago, having previously worked in the restaurant business.
Within a short space of time, Dicks has taken to the industry like a duck to water, having got to know all of the key UK licensees and international agents and has been described as the ‘font of all knowledge’ within the ITV CP team.
“He is a larger than life character and has ensured he has got himself known at all of the licensing network events,” said one nominating party.
“He fits in very well, and boy does he know how to talk.”
Katie Ball – Nickelodeon UK
Ball has been instrumental in delivering a multitude of cross category campaigns for the Nickelodeon Consumer products business.
To date she has delivered two successful cross-category pallets at ASDA, which is by no means a mean feat and clearly demonstrates her ability to tackle challenges quickly and efficiently whilst also building strong, long-term relationships.
She also delivered the Argos ‘Everyone’s a Winner Campaign’ for the second year in a row which involved liaising with touch points across every part of the Argos business. In 2015 Katie took on a brand new challenge and now manages the The Entertainer on behalf of Nickelodeon.
Jade Kellman – FremantleMedia Kids & Family
Jade has worked for FremantleMedia Kids & Family for two years and during that short amount of time has made a big impact on the division, securing numerous innovative softline deals for brands across the Fremantle portfolio and taking the division into brand new licensing territory.
One of Jade’s key roles has been working across FremantleMedia’s Danger Mouse brand. . The launch of the new series and the interest in Danger Mouse has provided the division with a multitude of licensing opportunities for the dapper secret agent, which Jade has exploited cleverly, securing best-in-class licensees in each area.
Not content with just managing kids and family brands, Jade has also worked across FremantleMedia’s adult brands, including Californian beach drama Baywatch. For this Jade has managed the relationship with existing licensees for renewals for Baywatch dress up (Smiffys) and secured new deals with BC International, for apparel, and Carousel, for calendars.
