Having originally made its debut in Nutty Comic, Bananaman is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, with agent Start Licensing revealing a new style guide to ramp up the merchandise push.

The brand has already carved itself a niche in the licensing marketplace. Licensees include Smiffy's, Delta DVD, Truffle Shuffle, J Fox Sox and BC International.

Hype Associates also recently added Bananaman to its range of Beano and Dandy greeting cards.

Smiffy's has enjoyed success with its Bananaman dress up suit and will be adding ladies and children's versions this year, while BC International's t-shirts and boxer shorts are sold in retailers including Next and River Island.

"Bananaman is a character that puts a smile on people's faces and has genuine appeal," explained Ian Downes, MD of Start Licensing. "For many people in their 20s and 30s he was one of their childhood heroes and, as such, resonates with them.

"The success we have had to date shows the commercial value of the character and we are sure the new style guide will encourage more licensees to join Team Bananaman."
